What High School Is Like In 2023

High school in 2023 is very overwhelming. Most high school students have something to say about COVID-19 and how online learning has impacted their learning. Personally, I think that online learning is something that could work, but not with high school students. High school students have very low motivation to work on something especially if it’s not at school. Online school feels very optional and a lot of teachers made the homework optional which was not good. That decision is what made many high schoolers feel like school is very optional and why they don’t have much motivation at all. Lately, there has been a highlight on the new strain of COVID-19 that has been causing many students to get sick and many schools to shut down. Many students are happy about this because they can go back to online courses, while others who really want to learn are upset about it.

Another issue that spiked during COVID-19 was mental health. The decrease in social interactions really impacted a lot of people’s mental health. When kids are more depressed, they will have a decline in motivation. With this decline in motivation, there have been more and more students failing. When students are failing, they often feel like they aren’t good enough and don’t try to pick up their grades. This causes them to fall into an endless cycle.

AI has also been vital to many high school students. There is an ongoing debate about whether AI is good or not. I think that AI is good for generating ideas and can definitely help you type out some generic essays. It is very important to not plagiarize and copy it word for word. It is very important to change it into your own words and use AI to help you.

The education system is really bad because students don’t need to learn to get an A in a class. Students can cram study the night before an exam and pass the test, but that doesn’t mean they understand the topics. Students are going to school to pass, not to learn. I don’t think that the grading system accurately shows how much a student is learning. It just shows how good they are at turning in assignments and passing tests. Studies show that students who graduate high school don’t even retain half the information they learned during school.

Overall, I think that high schoolers are very overwhelmed and don’t really learn anything at school. Mental health has also spiked and students are losing motivation for school.

  1. I think that you did really well in visualizing these relatable, universal experiences for us high schoolers. Great portrayal! Do you think that 2020 will be replayed with the new strain of COVID? I feel like one thing you can work on is using a more connective conclusion to tie everything together for the readers to remember.

  2. I LOVE how you brought up many aspects of schooling to support your overall argument. How has AI effected your education personally? Adding specific personal experience would allow the reader to connect more with you!!

  3. The author was very honest and sincere when writing this essay, and you can feel how they felt about the pandemic, online school, etc. What could be done to help improve schools to make it better for learning? I think the author could have added more on how specifically the pandemic impacted their own life in school.

  4. I liked how you highlighted several issues among high schoolers because it better showcases the fact that they are overwhelmed. If you were able to write more would you expand on each issue or only do deeper dives into a couple? One suggestion I have, especially in your first paragraph, is to try not to repeat words in the same sentence as it makes for a more comfortable read. I like it!
